Kenyan artiste Karun Mungai joins Grammy voting body

Kenyan independent musician Kuran Mungai has officially joined the Recording Academy’s Voting Membership, the peer-based group responsible for nominating and selecting winners of the Grammy Awards.
Taking to her official social media channels, Mungai described the opportunity as an honour that allows her to contribute meaningfully to spaces where representation is often lacking.
She shared that she’s excited to bring her perspective as a Kenyan, African, and independent alternative artist into the Grammy voting process and expressed gratitude to the creatives who helped open this door.
“I almost waited until the last moment to do this but I’m now officially a @RecordingAcademy voting member. It’s really such an honor to be able to make an impact in spaces like this,” Karun disclosed.

Mungai said that, as a member, she now has a voice in the Grammy Awards process and a platform to advocate for the music industry, support her peers, and grow in her own career.
She also expressed excitement about bringing their perspective into spaces where it is often missing, highlighting her identity as a Kenyan, African, and independent artist.
“As a member, I now have a voice in the GRAMMY Awards process and more. I’m excited to bring our perspective into spaces like this, where they are often missing,” she stated.
“I’m excited to do this as a Kenyan, an African, and as an independent, alternative artist.”
Additionally, Mungai expressed her gratitude to the Recording Academy and the creatives who supported her journey. Stating that as a member, she now has the chance to advocate for the Kenyan music industry globally, using her platform to elevate Kenyan artists and shape international perceptions of their work.
She emphasised her intention to support peers and bring Kenyan creative voices to the global stage.
“Thank you, Recording Academy, and a huge thank you to the creatives who opened this door for me. It’s so fitting to have doors opened by your peers. And I now have the chance to also advocate for our industry and support even more peers,” Karun expressed her gratitude.

Kuran emphasised her commitment to mentorship, advocacy, and championing independent creatives on the global music stage.
“Beyond the awards, this role is about mentorship, advocacy, and helping shape the future of music. I don’t take that lightly,” she added.
Kenya’s representation
With her induction, Kuran adds an independent Kenyan perspective to the Grammy voting pool, a growing trend as the Recording Academy actively expands its international reach.
She joins a growing list of Kenyan Grammy voting members, including Justo Asikoye, who joined in 2022; Sauti Sol in 2023, and tech entrepreneur Melissa Kariuki, who joined in 2025.
