Former State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena has opened up about one of the most difficult seasons of her life, revealing how she almost gave up her baby for adoption after getting pregnant before marriage.

Kanze shared through a YouTube interview on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, that at the time, she was young, not married, and had not yet joined college.

“Sikua nimeolewa, sikua nimeenda chuo kikuu. Nikashika mimba, nikajaribu kuificha kwa sababu nimeogopa,” she said.

Out of fear and uncertainty about her future, she decided to go to a boarding college instead of a day one, hoping it would help her hide the pregnancy.

She said that after learning about organisations that take in unwanted babies for adoption, she considered the option and even began the process.

“Madhira yangu kamili ilikua kumtoa ule mtoto for adoption. Kuna mashirika ambayo yanaweza kuchukua mtoto huyo ambaye humtaki wakamlea, hilo ndilo swala niliamua kuchukua mimi,” Kanze revealed.

‘I had already planned everything’

Kanze explained that she had not told her mother about the pregnancy and had gone through counselling to prepare for the adoption.

Ili usianze kuwa na trauma,” she said.

However, things took a different turn when her friend, who had accompanied her to give birth, called her aunt and informed her that Kanze had fallen while shopping in Eastleigh and had been taken to Pumwani Hospital. Her mother, who had no idea about the pregnancy, suddenly felt something was wrong and decided to travel to Nairobi.

By the time her mother arrived, Kanze had already given birth and was holding her baby.

“Ikawa ni kwamba kitu ikaingia mama yangu kikamwambia pata basi kuja Nairobi. Nilikua nishazaa niko na mtoto wangu. Hivyo ndivyo nilienda nyumbani na mtoto wangu,” she said.

Reflecting on the experience, Kanze shared the lesson she learned from her late mother, who stood by her despite everything.

“Kuna hilo funzo niliojifunza mimi kutoka kwa marehemu mama yangu. Umeshika ile mimba sawa, but now let us face tomorrow. Tutafanya nini? Kutoka hapa tunaanzia wapi?” she said.
