Jaguar admits he was emotional after Raila crowned Kigeugeu his favourite track

Musician and former Starehe MP Charles Kanyi, alias Jaguar, has revealed how emotional he felt after the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga singled out his hit song “Kigeugeu” as his favourite.
Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Saturday, October 18, 2025, Jaguar revealed that the recognition had a profound impact on both his personal life and professional career, marking a turning point that elevated him to national prominence.

He shared that he first met Raila 14 years ago, explaining that the meeting came after he received a call from the current Dagoretti South MP, informing him that someone wanted to meet him.
“So, I am Charles Kanyi, former MP for Starehe Constituency and currently a Commissioner on the Commission of Administrative Justice, and I am also an artiste. I join other Kenyans in celebrating the life of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. I met him 14 years ago, and I remember receiving a call from the current Dagoretti South MP, who told me that someone wanted to meet me,” Jaquar said.
Eager to meet the MP, Jaguar entered the car provided and found himself at Raila Odinga’s office.
He revealed that Raila was visibly happy to see him and immediately mentioned that “Kigeugeu” was his favourite song.
Jaguar recounted that he was taken aback, having never met Raila before, and described how the former prime minister sang the song from start to finish during their encounter.
“Since I wanted to meet him, I got into his car and found myself in the former prime minister’s office. He was very happy to see me and told me that ‘Kigeugeu’ was his favourite song. I was shocked because I had never met him before, and he sang the song from start to finish,” he added.

Jaguar further explained that on the same night, Raila announced on a Churchill show that “Kigeugeu” was his favourite track, a revelation that dramatically transformed Jaguar’s career.
He disclosed that from that moment, his bookings became constant, and the song gained national acclaim.
“That night, he had an interview with Churchill, during which he announced that ‘Kigeugeu’ was his favourite song. From that day, everything about my life changed as the song became a national anthem. I was booked every single day, and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for what he did for me. As we celebrate his life, I want to say that as leaders, we have also seen how we will be celebrated when we die,” he said.
“Kigeugeu” was released in 2011 while Jaguar was with Ogopa Deejays and resonated widely because it addressed societal ills, including corruption and the failings of politicians.
