Forex trader Sammy Boy has disclosed the highest amount of money he has ever lost in his trading career, a staggering Ksh18 million.

Speaking in an interview with Dr Ofweneke on Wednesday, August 14, 2025, Sammy Boy shared insights into his trading journey, the risks involved, and misconceptions about the profession.

Before diving into the numbers, Sammy addressed a recent online skit by comedian Flaqo Raz that poked fun at forex traders.

He expressed his frustration at the portrayal, saying it paints a misleading picture of the industry.

“This is not what forex traders do. It pissed me off. I found it as a discouraging factor for the young people who are just finishing school,” he said.

The most he has lost

During the conversation, Dr Ofweneke asked Sammy the most money he had ever lost in a single instance. Without hesitation, Sammy replied, “The most amount I have lost, genuinely, is around Ksh18 million.”

He explained that in the world of forex trading, losses are part of the game, but the magnitude can shock many people.

“I show people what they want to see. Maybe they don’t pray,” he added, hinting at the selective nature of what is often shared on social media versus the reality behind the scenes.

When asked about young people and forex, Sammy noted that the industry has attracted a growing number of youth in Kenya. “It is something that most young people are doing right now. Most young people are into it,” he said.

How he got started

Sammy shared that his trading journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic when job losses were at their peak.

“When Corona started, that is how I started. I was like, people don’t have jobs anymore. Companies are laying off people. That is when I joined crypto. All these could bring me one hundred, two hundred dollars,” he said.

He emphasised that forex trading is not as widely understood or believed in by many Kenyans, despite the potential it holds for those willing to learn and take calculated risks.

On the Flaqo skit, Sammy maintained that such portrayals can be harmful, especially for beginners who might be discouraged from pursuing trading seriously. Flaqo, however, has clarified that his intention was purely comedic and not aimed at any specific trader.
