Dem Wa Facebook calls out Kangemi residents who pretend to live in Westlands

Comedienne Dem Wa Facebook has launched a sharp criticism against people from Kangemi who often claim to be living in the more affluent neighbourhood of Westlands.
Speaking when she hosted Carol Sonnie on her YouTube channel on Thursday, September 11, 2025, Dem Wa Facebook narrated how she once fell victim to such a misrepresentation when a man she was meant to meet convinced her that he was based in Westlands.
She explained that she set out happily for the meeting, only to discover that the gentleman had in fact misled her and was residing in Kangemi.
“People from Kangemi, please, if you are from Kangemi, just say you are from Kangemi. Stop this business of claiming you are from Westlands. Someone once asked me out on a date and told me he was in Westlands. I went there happily, only for him to start telling me to keep walking further ahead,” she narrated.

According to her narration, the man kept urging her to move further along, even as she passed through Westlands, until she eventually realised that she had arrived in Kangemi.
She added that the man introduced the location with a casual reference, pointing to areas predominantly populated by the Luhya community, which caught her by surprise.
“I passed Westlands and eventually found myself in Kangemi, in the middle of my fellow Luhyas.”
Growing trend
The comedienne used the humorous incident as a springboard to scold what she described as a growing trend of people inflating their addresses for social status.
She insisted that there is no harm in stating one’s true origin and urged those living in Kangemi to own up to it rather than masking their background by claiming residence in Westlands.
“There is nothing wrong with saying where you truly come from. If you are from Kangemi, own it proudly instead of pretending to be from Westlands. People should stop chasing status with fake addresses and just be real about their roots.”
To underscore her message, Dem Wa Facebook switched gears and cheekily reported that she was streaming her live broadcast from Lavington, another upmarket estate in Nairobi.
She joked that life in such neighbourhoods comes with a peace of mind and a piece of money, adding that people should start embracing honesty rather than clinging to a false sense of status.
“So today I am coming live from Lavington. Life here is good. When you live here you get some peace of mind and a bit of money. People should start speaking the truth. People from Kangemi should stop pretending.”
