At least 43 clubs in Nairobi face closure over noise pollution, K24 Digital has established.

The entertainment joints were flagged in the ongoing crackdown targeting bars notorious for playing loud music.

In a memo addressed to all sub-county administrators, the Nairobi Liquor Licencing Board said the process of revoking and shutting down the clubs is ongoing.

The board noted that the owners of the affected joints have failed to comply with the set guidelines despite arrests.

“The County Liquor Board has received complaints from various Resident Associations and the General Public on excessive noise and vibration on licensed liquor premises.

“The complaints have also been received by the County Environment Compliance and Enforcement officers and despite arrests and arraignment in court, the proprietors have refused to comply and continues to contravene the stipulated licensing conditions,” Hesbon Angwena, the Director Liquor Licensing, said.

“By a copy of this Memo, you are instructed to start the process of cancellation, revocation and closing down the under-listed premises as per the provision of the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Act 2014 in line with Section 21(1) and 35(3).

“You are advised to Co-opt technical teams from urban planning and County NEMA to offer Technica advice and support.”

The latest development comes a day after Kileleshwa Ward Rep Robert Alai urged authorities to crack down on several entertainment joints, which he accused of causing noise pollution in his ward.

In a letter to the Director, Nairobi Liquor Licensing Department, Alai, a renowned blogger, accused the entertainment spots of disrupting peace and tranquility in the neighbourhood.

“On behalf of the residents of Kileleshwa ward, I wish to plead with your able office to immediately rein in the listed entertainment joints that are not only being a nuisance through noise and air pollution but are also becoming a den of prostitution, drug peddlers and other social delinquents,” Alai wrote.

He cited clubs such as iBury, Kettle House, Numero Five, Viva Lounge, The Monk, Bwibo restaurant, Sufra gardens, Haven’s Lounge, Hera Aqua Garden and Slosh Bar as being notorious for noise pollution in the affluent neighborhood.

Others include Deja vu, Samaki Samaki, The bar Next door, Coyote, Tipsy Lounge in addition to Mialle, Coco Jambo and Edu’s bar.
