CNN reporter Larry Madowo has commented on the new roof under construction at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
In his opinion, Larry expressed his hopes that the new roof would meet the necessary standards and be of good quality.
“The new roof is coming along. I hope it doesn’t leak when it’s done,” Larry wrote.
Larry’s comments come a few months after his altercation with the Cabinet Secretary(CS) for transport, Kipchomba Murkomen over the situation at JKIA.
For the better part of 2024, Larry has been persistent in highlighting how Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) was failing to adequately restructure JKIA.
As seen in his social media posts, the famous reporter often expresses his dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of protection for typical airport users.
Larry’s call for a better JKIA
In April 2024, Kenya was experiencing heavy rain, and Larry Madowo recounted how he walked along the pavements to get to a taxi while it was raining heavily.
Larry expressed how it was uncomfortable to endure the relentless rain during the ordeal, and how it was worsened by the lack of shelter at the airport.
This inconvenience led Larry to highlight his long travels throughout many countries with better conditions.
“What is this, really? How embarrassing for an international airport. We can do better than this,” said Larry.
According to him, it was apparent from his comments that government officials were probably unaware that there was a need for shelter at the terminal, possibly because they rarely go through it for ordinary travellers.
Larry vowed to continue to expose embarrassing scenes until the government takes action.
“Their leaders don’t experience this embarrassment at JKIA because they are picked up from the plane, taken to an exclusive government VIP section and then straight into a waiting car. They don’t mingle with the masses,” Larry explained.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Kipchomba Murkomen was not pleased with Larry’s remarks and Murkomen hit out at Madowo for sharing videos exposing and complaining about the state of the airport.
Murkomen acknowledged that the infrastructure has been “massively dilapidated” for a long period, and dismissed the expose faulting Madowo for living abroad.
“I saw Larry taking videos at the airport. I was laughing because Larry had been with us in the country for the last 50 years when that airport was like that. Suddenly because he lives in ‘majuu’ his eyes are open and realises that there is no shade when you exit JKIA. It happens to all of us when we travel,” Murkomen said.
