Willis Otieno brands Ruto delusional for comparing himself with previous presidents
Lawyer Willis Otieno has scoffed at President William Ruto’s recent statements comparing himself to Kenya’s former presidents, branding the remarks as delusional and a political comedy.
Otieno’s utterances come at a time when there is growing tension and vocal opposition to President Ruto regarding his leadership style and policy direction.
As Kenya continues to grapple with economic and social challenges, the verbal sparring reflects the polarised environment and competing visions for the country’s leadership and legacy.
In a statement on his X account on Monday, August 4, 2025, Otieno reflected mounting frustrations with the current administration’s direction and rhetoric amid an increasingly polarised political climate.
Ruto had sought to align himself with the leadership qualities of Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta during a public address, positioning his presidency as a continuation of their legacies. However, Otieno was quick to dismantle these comparisons, issuing sharp rebuttals to each claim.
“Jomo’s courage?” Bro, Jomo silenced dissent with detentions and an iron fist; you’re out here silencing dissent with influencers and prayer rallies. “Moi’s wisdom?” Wisdom? The man ran Kenya like a village baraza, yes, but at least he remembered names and didn’t read speeches like a student caught cheating,” the statement read.
Otieno also questioned Ruto’s take on Mwai Kibaki’s intellect and economic stewardship.

“Kibaki had a First-Class brain, wrote policy with precision, and built the economy without hashtags. You’re out here with ‘bottom-up’ slogans that haven’t graduated from nursery math,” he asserted, highlighting what he sees as shallow messaging from the current government.
His most pointed criticism was reserved for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s development blueprint, the Big 4 Agenda, which President Ruto had previously dismissed as a form of state capture. Otieno highlighted the stark contradictions in Ruto’s stance, noting how the current administration now appears to embrace the very plan it once condemned.
“Uhuru’s plan?” The same plan you called “state capture”? The same Big 4 Agenda you trashed and buried under a pile of tax hikes and hustler funds? If that’s your plan now, we truly need divine intervention,” read the statement.
“This guy woke up, looked in the mirror, and said, ‘Let me cosplay as all former presidents and still do none of what they did right.’”
