National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has disclosed details of a meeting held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, with Sebastian Groth, the German Ambassador to Kenya, focusing on strengthening the relationship between the two nations.

In a statement released following the discussions, Wetang’ula outlined the key areas of focus.

“Kenya continues to deepen and strengthen its longstanding relationship with the Federal Republic of Germany. Earlier today, I hosted the German Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Sebastian Groth, at my office in Parliament Buildings,” Wetang’ula stated on X.

A significant part of their discussion centered on Kenya’s efforts to combat corruption.

“Recognizing Parliament’s role in the fight against corruption, I informed the Ambassador on recent legislative progress, including the Conflict of Interest Bill, which has been passed by the National Assembly and is currently before the Senate, as well as the Anti-Money Laundering Bill, which is under consideration,” the Speaker noted.

He emphasized the potential impact of these bills once enacted, stating they will enable more decisive action against individuals engaged in corrupt practices.

Furthermore, Wetang’ula highlighted the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering bilateral cooperation.

“Further, I underscored the importance of revitalizing the Kenya-German Parliamentary Friendship Group as a vehicle for enhancing parliamentary diplomacy and deepening bilateral cooperation,” he wrote.

Ambassador Groth, according to the Speaker, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to its partnership with Kenya across several key sectors.

“Ambassador Groth, on his part, reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Kenya across key sectors such as trade, agriculture, tourism, and education,” Mr. Wetang’ula reported.

The Ambassador also highlighted Germany’s ongoing support for Kenyan students.

“He highlighted ongoing scholarship programmes supporting Kenyan students to study the German language at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University,” the Speaker added.

The meeting underscores the continued diplomatic engagement between Kenya and Germany, with discussions spanning legislative efforts against corruption, the revitalization of parliamentary ties, and Germany’s commitment to supporting key sectors and educational opportunities in Kenya.
