Wanga terms it devolution blessing for Homa Bay to host Madaraka Day for 1st time since independence

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has hailed the government for its decision to hold this year’s Madaraka Day in the county.
This year’s Madaraka Day, which will be the 62nd since Kenya gained Independence, will be held at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County on June 1, 2025.
Speaking to a local TV station on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Wanga termed the event a devolution blessing, being held in the county for the 1st time since independence.
“I think it was a good decision that the country made to rotate celebrations. This is one of the biggest blessings of devolution to be able to move celebrations from county to county. Homa Bay is very honoured that, after 62 years of independence for the first time, we get this opportunity to host this celebration,” Wanga stated.
“The way these celebrations are hosted, they go regionally. This creates a sense among the people that they are part of this country; it brings us together regardless of where you stand politically.”
This year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be held under the theme “Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs.” Madaraka Day is celebrated annually to commemorate Kenya’s attainment of self-rule.
On Monday, May 26, 2025, Wanga led a delegation of key national and county leaders in handing over the 12,000-seater stadium to the National Celebrations Steering Committee, ready for the celebrations.
Goodies for Homa Bay
Courtesy of the celebrations, Homa Bay has received several development projects from the national government, including the refurbishment of Kabunde Airstrip. The upgrade entails the refurbishment of the passenger terminal and the construction of a new apron and taxiways.
The county has also had several of its roads repaired or upgraded, including the 1.2-kilometre Homa Bay Pier–Stadium Road and the 2-kilometre access road to the County Government Headquarters in Arujo.
In total, some 35 kilometres of roads have been constructed or rehabilitated to support the fete, including the Wahambla–Imbo and Lala roads.
