Voting underway as aspirants battle for UDA ticket ahead of Baringo senatorial contest

Locals in Baringo County are participating on Saturday, September 20, 2025, in the UDA party nominations for the senatorial seat, which fell vacant following the death of Senator William Cheptumo on February 16, 2025.
However, voting is yet to commence at Marigat Primary School in Marigat Ward, Baringo South Constituency, due to a technical hitch, attributed to the late provision of the activation code/password for the polling gadgets by the ICT team.
At the Kabarnet polling station, in Kabarnet Ward in Baringo Central, so far, only 16 voters out of 930 registered voters in the station have turned up to participate in the nomination process.

The voting comes after the IEBC officially declared the seat vacant; ten aspirants expressed interest in the race under the UDA ticket.
They include Sylas Tochim, Reuben Chepsongol, Daniel Kiptoo, Linus Kamket, Isaiah Kirukmet, Evans Mundulel, Vincent Chemitei, Joseph Cherutoi, Wycliffe Kipsang Tobole, and Isaac Chebon, all of whom were formally cleared as UDA candidates.
For the past three months, the aspirants have traversed the county in vigorous campaigns, seeking to win the support of 281,059 registered voters spread across 1,029 polling stations, according to IEBC’s 2022 statistics.
All six sub-counties, Baringo North, Baringo South, Mogotio, Tiaty, Eldama Ravine, and Baringo Central, produced candidates, bringing up regional political rivalries.

As a result, the race saw four aspirants withdraw in favour of stronger contenders. Cherutoi and Chepsongol from Baringo North stepped down to support Daniel Kiptoo from Baringo Central, while Kirukmet from North backed Vincent Chemitei of Baringo South.
This left six candidates, Tochim, Chemitei, Chebon, Tobole, Kiptoo, and Mundulel, to battle it out in today’s nominations.
Whoever clinches the UDA ticket today will face stiff competition in the upcoming by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025, where KANU party chairman Gideon Moi is widely expected to join the race.
