In a heartfelt address to his constituents on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Turkana Central MP Emathe Namuar issued a public apology for voting ‘yes’ on the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
The bill, which ignited widespread protests across Kenya, was ultimately rejected by President William Ruto, who decided against signing it into law.
Speaking in his constituency, Namuar expressed gratitude to President Ruto for his decision to return the bill to Parliament, highlighting the president’s willingness to heed the public outcry.
“I first want to thank our president for deciding to send the Finance Bill 2024 back to Parliament for further discussion, or for choosing not to sign it because of the events that have transpired in our country,” Namuar said.
“I congratulate him for the leadership he has demonstrated today, ensuring that every Kenyan understands that the president is a person who listens to their concerns.”
Namuar also extended an apology to Kenyans on behalf of all MPs who supported the bill, acknowledging the public’s frustration and discontent.
“If we made a mistake by voting ‘yes,’ we apologize. That is what I would like to say, and also, as you, Mr. President, have said, let us return to dialogue. We, as your foot soldiers, also apologize on your behalf,” he stated.
This apology came a day after President Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 in response to nationwide protests.
The president, recognizing the strong opposition from the public, opted not to assent to the bill, instead proposing austerity measures to reduce government operational costs.
In Nairobi on Thursday, President Ruto emphasized his decision was in line with the prevailing public sentiment, signalling a commitment to listening to the voices of the Kenyan people.
Later, speaking to the press in Mombasa, a visibly emotional Deputy President Gachagua urged the younger generation, who had been at the forefront of the protests, to call off their planned demonstrations.
“The President has acknowledged the issue and has taken the right step. It is only fair that we call off the protest to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property,” Gachagua appealed.
