Endebess Estate primary school teacher has committed suicide by hanging himself inside his house in Masaba village, Kiminini constituency, Trans Nzoia County.

The 48-year-old Joseph Chemwami, a father of three, took his life some minutes to noon today.

Although the motive of his action has not yet been established, it is reported that at 11:41 AM, the teacher wrote a text message to his brother Mario Chemwami asking him to report his action to their father.

Kiminini location Chief Samson Webi told K24 Digital that although Chemwami did not leave behind any suicide note, the teacher is suspected to have been struggling in an extra marital affair with another woman.

“After receiving a call from my village elder, I rushed to the scene where, we found his body hanging at his house,” Webi confirmed.

Webi said police officers have since visited the scene to find out what might have led to Chemwani ending his life.

“Crime scene officers are in the area, they are still searching his house to find out if there is any suicide note or trace that can lead us to why he committed the act,” Webi said.

Dominic Kiboi who is the Kenya National Union of Teachers KNUT Endebess Branch mourned Chemwani and described the teacher as a hard-working, committed, visionary teacher who always posted exemplary results in his teaching subjects.

“We are still in shock that Chemwami has left us, we are mourning a very industrious, charismatic, jovial and an up to task teacher,” Kiboi said.

Kiboi called on the security agencies to speed up the investigations so that teachers get to know the motive behind his unthinkable act.

He, however, attributed such actions to the amount of pressure teachers are going through implementing the Competency Based Curriculum CBC at workplace and the huge workload.

“Teachers are going through a lot of untold suffering, you can imagine a teacher who is not properly trained on CBC required to deliver by the government, these are some of the causes teachers are committing suicide” Kiboi added.

His body has been moved to Kiminini Cottage Hospital morgue while the family is planning his burial arrangements.
