Villagers from Kathituni in Njagini village, Mwimbi ward, Maara constituency, are reeling after the body of a 45-year-old woman, identified as Pauline Karambu, was discovered in a horrifying state.

According to a report shared by a local TV station on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, used condoms were also found littered around her body, drawing outrage from villagers of the Kereke-Mbiuki-led constituency.

Sexual assault

Joyce Kagendo, a local resident who spoke to the press, said the woman had evidently been sexually assaulted, adding that the brutality of the attack was visible for all to see.

“The woman had evidently been raped and treated like an animal. Everyone can see that. We need this matter handled immediately. We women are being misused,” Kagendo said.

Another man from the area described witnessing the extent of the injuries, noting that Karambu’s breasts had been cut, her lower body badly bruised, and her legs broken, suggesting she endured immense pain before her death.

“I have never seen such a case, and it appears the woman went through too much pain before she died. Her breasts were also cut off, and her lower private parts were badly bruised. I am saying that the perpetrator should present himself so that the same can be meted out on him,” the man said.

Gachui wa Issac, another villager, said that Karambu, a church member, had been attacked in a thicket and sexually assaulted repeatedly.

She explained that her leg had also been broken, which enabled the attackers to carry out the assault, and that the scene showed multiple used condoms.

“The woman was a church member. She was raped in this thicket here. She was raped so badly that her breasts were cut, and we have found many condoms there. Her leg was also broken so that they could carry out the assault,” Gachui said.

Police officers, led by Maara subcounty OCPD Augustus Nzunguli, confirmed that they had recovered a blood-stained panga and used condoms from the site, indicating that Karambu was raped before being killed.

Nzunguli added that the case has been handed over to the Subcounty Criminal Investigation Officer in Maara for further investigations.

“Police officers recovered a blood-stained panga and used condoms, which we believe indicate that the deceased was raped before being killed. The case is now with the Subcounty Criminal Investigation Officer, Maara Subcounty.”

Troves of residents who gathered at the scene expressed anger and demanded immediate action.

In a video shared online, women gathered at the scene could be seen wailing, calling upon the heavens to deliver severe curses upon the perpetrators.
