Tetu constituency Member of Parliament Geoffrey Wandeto has cautioned that impeachment processes targeting county governors are increasingly being exploited as political weapons rather than instruments of accountability.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during an interview on a local TV station, Wandeto highlighted that while the Constitution provides mechanisms to remove underperforming governors, these provisions are often manipulated for political gain.

“What we have learned from various impeachment cases, both successful and unsuccessful, is that impeachment is now being employed either to remove those who are not wanted or to protect those who are,” he said.

The MP warned that governors are frequently subjected to undue pressure from MCAs. “Many governors will tell you they have to meet certain demands from MCAs. In some instances, MCAs are expected to collect money regularly just for the governor to maintain peace,” Wandeto explained, highlighting how the process can become a tool for blackmail rather than oversight.

Devolution’s promise compromised

Wandeto criticised the failure to deliver essential services under devolution, noting that corruption has been the most successfully devolved aspect.

“If we were to give ourselves a scorecard on devolution, health, water, and other services have not been properly devolved. The only thing that has been successfully devolved is corruption,” he said.

He added that political and financial interests have made it increasingly difficult to hold governors accountable, creating an environment where impeachment proceedings are often influenced by ulterior motives rather than actual performance.

The MP remarks follow a series of high-profile impeachment cases, including Kericho Governor Erick Mutai, who survived his second impeachment, and Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who was successfully impeached.

It also comes at a time when Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja faces growing political pressure with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), led by Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, threatening to impeach the governor on claims of mismanagement of county services and privatisation of core public health functions.
