Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha, on Saturday, July 27, was infuriated when a section of students at Starehe Boys’ Centre & School began wandering off when retired president Mwai Kibaki’s daughter, Judy Kibaki, was reading her father’s speech.

The former Head of State has been the school’s uninterrupted patron for the last 50 years.

Starehe Boys’ Centre & School celebrated 60 years of existence on Saturday, and CS Magoha, who is an alumnus of the institution, presided over the ceremony.

Other old boys of the national school also attended the event, in which the Late Kibra MP, Ken Okoth, was scheduled to address the gathering.

“During my days as a secondary school student, I couldn’t walk away when a guest of honour was addressing a gathering. How I — as the son of Magoha — wish caning could be introduced in schools to curb such wayward behaviour. Let my words not be taken out of context; I am saying that in my personal capacity, not as the Education CS,” said Magoha.

“Corporal punishment can only be reintroduced to schools through legislation, and I lack such powers,” said Magoha.

During Judy Kibaki’s speech, the event’s emcee had to ask the students to “behave appropriately” before Ms Kibaki could continue to read her father’s 60th anniversary message.
