Sossion: ODM-UDA will form alliance with Ruto as 2027 presidential candidate

By , November 13, 2025

Former KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has claimed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) will form a partnership ahead of the 2027 General Election, with President William Ruto as the coalition’s joint presidential candidate.

Speaking at a local TV station on Thursday, November 13, 2025, Sossion praised the party’s resilience and institutional strength, describing it as one of the few political movements in Kenya’s multiparty era to sustain itself for over two decades.

“ODM at 20 is a big celebration. It’s not very easy in the post-multipartism era in Kenya to have a political party that has put in place structures and a democratic policy that has sustained itself for over 20 years,” Sossion said.

He noted that President Ruto had acknowledged ODM’s contribution to Kenya’s political stability and recognised its place in government through ongoing cooperation between the two parties.

“The president has recognised that. That is why he has engaged with ODM, and that’s why there are five ODM ministers and 17 principal secretaries. Essentially, ODM is part of the government of the Republic of Kenya,” Sossion stated.

He added that President Ruto’s recent remarks at the late ODM leader Raila Odinga, where he vowed to protect the party from internal divisions, reflected the growing partnership between the ruling UDA and the opposition party.

“The president was very clear when he said he is not going to allow anybody to disorganise ODM. He said ODM must be protected to remain strong even as we move towards 2027, and that ODM will form the government or be part of the next government,” Sossion said.

“When ODM invites him for an event, he attends within the framework of cooperation and with the historical fact that he was a member of the Pentagon.”

He drew parallels between ODM and UDA, saying both were founded on social democratic ideals.

“When the president moved out of ODM to form URP, he fashioned a party similar to ODM, which eventually evolved into UDA. When you look at the philosophies of UDA and ODM, they are the same: social democratic parties. The president is at home, and so are the members of ODM with this engagement,” Sossion said.

Additionally, he asserted that the two parties will unite behind Ruto’s re-election bid.

“Going into 2027, UDA and ODM will be in partnership, and the presidential candidate for that coalition will be President William Ruto, who will be re-elected,” he affirmed.
