Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has been impeached.

The Senate plenary on Thursday, December 17 voted in favour of the controversial county chief’s removal.

More than half of the elected senators’ population (24) voted for Sonko’s exit. Forty-five (45) of the senators, minus Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji (absent with apology) and Boniface Kabaka (deceased), took part in the vote.

In nearly all the four charges brought against Sonko, 27 senators voted to confirm his removal, 16 cast their ballot to save Sonko, while two legislators abstained from voting.

Senators Mutula Kilonzo and Johnson Sakaja declined to cast their vote in favour of or against Sonko’s ejection in all counts levelled against the embattled county boss.

The senators voted on each of the four accusations levelled against Sonko.

The four grounds which Sonko’s removal was anchored on include: gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, gross misconduct and commission of crimes under the National law.

The Senate commenced impeachment proceedings against Sonko after 88 out of Nairobi’s 122 MCAs voted on December 3 to impeach the governor.
