Special courts in Makindu Law Courts last month concluded 51 cases of defilement, which saw six suspects handed life sentences.
Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed revealed that six suspects were handed life sentences while a majority were handed nine to 20 years in prison.
Mohammed said most of these cases were handled during the service week in mid-October that was meant to help clear backlog of defilement cases at the law courts.
The county commissioner said 52 other cases are awaiting judgement, while more culprits are currently defending themselves in court, over rampant cases of defilement in the area.
The county commissioner made the remarks on Wednesday in Wote town, when he chaired a planning meeting for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In October, six special court sessions were initiated to tackle over 220 cases of defilement with magistrates drawn from Lamu, Wajir and Makueni courts to help in clearing a four-year backlog.
During the meeting, Mohammed said that the government was committed to ending the vice that was affecting especially young women and girls, whose education is cut short due to early pregnancies.
While calling for concerted efforts from all government and non-state agencies to combat the worrying trend, Mohammed warned sex pests their days are numbered.
“These cases are real. We also want to end this vice of GBV against women and girls and we will not rest until all culprits are brought to book,” he warned.
The sixteen days of activism will start on Monday, November 25, 2019 and end on December 10.
Speaking at the same meeting, the County Gender, Children, Culture and Social Services Principal Gender Officer Faith Mwende said that the Gender Recovery Centre of Nairobi Hospital will hold road shows in market centres in the county.
Mwende said that they will agree on the 10 market centres that the road shows will be carried out, besides other events that will help curb the vice that has hit the county like a storm.
On her part, the Voluntary Services Overseas (VSO) Administrator Maureen Nduati said that her organization will create awareness during the period in major centres across the region.
The members also agreed to utilise talk shows in local radio stations to increase awareness among the people.
