Sifuna denies being coerced into supporting Gachagua’s impeachment

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has strongly denied claims that he was coerced into supporting the impeachment motion against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying his decision was based entirely on his independent judgment and long-held political convictions.
Speaking on Friday, August 15, 2025, during a forum organised by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Sifuna dismissed claims that his stance was dictated by political orders, calling them “unfounded and misleading.”
“I had publicly expressed my objections to some of the things coming from the Deputy President’s pulpit way before impeachment became an issue,” he said. “To imply that I needed to be pushed or paid to take that position is simply false.”
The Nairobi Senator added that his position was “guided by principle, not by pressure,” stressing that, “When I took that vote, it was because I believed it was the right thing to do, not because anyone told me to.”
Independent Political Stance
The ODM Secretary-General insisted that his vote in the Gachagua impeachment was entirely his own, urging those making bribery or coercion claims to “bring the evidence or name the individuals involved” instead of issuing blanket accusations.

The impeachment of Gachagua on October 17, 2024, marked the first removal of a Deputy President in Kenya’s history, sparking heated political debate and deepening divisions between the executive and Parliament
Criticism of Prosecutorial Conduct
Sifuna also used the platform to launch a blistering attack on the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), describing it as the “weakest link” in the fight against abuse of power.
He accused the ODPP of “approving politically motivated charges” and failing to protect Kenyans from what he termed as “manufactured cases” generated in police stations.
“Public prosecutors have a constitutional duty to uphold justice, safeguard the public interest, and prevent the abuse of legal processes,” he said. “If they allow themselves to be used as tools of political intimidation, we will lose the constitutional gains we have fought so hard to protect.”
