Panic gripped Nyang’ori PAG High School in Vihiga County after a guard, who was attacked by a Form Three student, died on Sunday while receiving treatment.
Attack that happened on Saturday night turned tragic after the watchman succumbed while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu.
The student is in police custody at Gambogi police post.
School Board of Management (BoM) chairman Dr Hudson Aluvanze confirmed the incident.
Attack came moments after the student had asked the principal to pray for him.
Dr Aluvanze said the student did not have a history of indiscipline.
“After talking to the principal, he joined the Christian Union team for prayers, but it is at this point that he started getting violent,” he explained.
Security was called in to contain the student, who instead turned against one of them and hit him on the head.
The watchman became unconscious and was rushed to hospital while police were called in to pick the student.
“We are assuring parents that the school is calm,” Dr Aluvanze said, adding that senior education officials had taken over the matter.
The unfortunate incident comes days after another Form Three student at Kisii High School attacked and seriously injured two teachers.
The student, who has since been arraigned in court to face charges of attempted murder, was irked when one of the teachers summoned him to the staffroom and ordered him to kneel down for skipping the morning classes.
It is then that the student rushed back to the dormitory and came back with a knife he used to stab the two teachers attacked. The teacher’s colleague who came to his rescue was also attacked before other students who heard the commotion disarmed their colleague.
In neighboring Nyamira County, another Form Two student at Mwokerero Secondary School also attempted to attack a teacher with a machete.
