Senator Mungatana tells leaders to prove track record before seeking 2027 seats

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has called on current leaders to demonstrate their achievements and provide regular reports to constituents before seeking re-election in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement posted on his Facebook account on September 7, 2025, Mungatana disclosed that he had emphasised the need for accountability in leadership during a meeting that brought together grassroots leaders from Handampia, Maweni, Bondeni, and Kelokelo areas.

“If you are in office, you must tell us what you have done for Tana River before asking for a new seat,” Mungatana declared.

Accountability in leadership

The Senator criticised leaders who focus solely on politics and campaigning without providing updates on their performance in office.

He stressed that elected officials have an obligation to keep their constituents informed about their activities and achievements, arguing that accountability to the people should take precedence over continuous political manoeuvring.

“Leaders who are in office must explain to citizens and provide their reports regularly, not just engage in politics from morning to evening, asking for seats in the next campaign,” Mungatana asserted.

Mungatana further explained that the meeting was specifically aimed at providing information about his legislative work, including representation, oversight, and lawmaking activities in the Senate.

“The meeting that brought grassroots leaders from Handampia, Maweni, Bondeni, and Kelokelo was specifically to provide information about my work in the Senate regarding representation, oversight, and lawmaking,” he stated.

Divisive politics

Mungatana’s comments come days after he appealed to Tana River residents to reject leaders promoting ethnic-based politics, warning that such divisions threaten peace and development in the region.

Speaking on Sunday, August 24, 2025, in Tana River, he criticised politicians who travel across the region, urging residents to unite only two communities, the Orma and the Wardhei, to form a government.

“There are some people wandering around, saying we should take two tribes to form a government. What kind of government is that? That is a government of daydreams. These are individuals without a proper agenda. They are traversing the entire Tana River, talking about uniting only two tribes,” he stated.
