Controversial Meru Senator Muthika Linturi has now pledged to support commercial sex workers should he win the Meru Governor seat in the August election.

While speaking to a group of sex workers from the county, the lawmaker said that commercial sex work is a key indicator of a thriving economy and therefore he will ensure that he creates an enabling environment for the trade.

“I am well-travelled and I know that the best way to know that the economy is vibrant is by looking at commercial sex work as a key indicator. If there is no money, no one will come to seek your services,” Linturi said.

He said that his administration will ensure that the business thrives in Meru County by creating laws and policies that address the challenges faced by sex workers.

To promote the trade, Muturi said that he will ensure that the workers have free access to drugs and condoms to protect them from sexually transmitted infections (STI) and other illnesses.

“Never again will our hospitals run out of drugs and condoms. We will also ensure you access vaccines needed to protect you against STIs and cervical cancer,” he said.

Muturi also lauded the sex workers for their continuous use of protection in their line of duty. Using protection, the lawmaker says has helped the county reduce the spread of HIV/AIDs.

In his address, Senator Linturi also encouraged the sex workers to speak out against the abuses they go through at the hands of their clients.

“Do not shy away from speaking about what you do,” he said.
