Senator Cherargei brands Kalonzo a coward for skipping Mashujaa Day in Kitui

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka a coward after the latter skipped the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Kitui County.
Speaking through his X handle on Monday, October 20, 2025, Cherargei accused Kalonzo of showing disrespect to the country by failing to attend the national event held in his own political backyard at the Ithookwe Stadium.

Cherargei said Kalonzo’s absence from the celebrations was unpatriotic and a show of political cowardice.
“Kalonzo is a coward of the century; by skipping the Mashujaa Day national celebrations, that was unpatriotic to the country, yet all Ukambani are attending in mammoth crowds,” he wrote.
The outspoken senator claimed that the Wiper leader had fled to the United Kingdom to avoid the national celebrations, only returning to attend the funeral of the late Raila Odinga.
“Kalonzo had run away to the United Kingdom to hide but came back because of Jakom’s funeral,” Cherargei added. “He must have confused the event because this is a national celebration, not a political rally.”

Cherargei went on to praise Kitui residents and the wider Ukambani region for turning up in large numbers to welcome President William Ruto and his guests.
“Thank you, Kitui residents and Ukambani nation, for the warm and heroic reception to President Ruto and guests, and for hosting this national event to celebrate our heroes,” he said.
Ruto dedicates the day to Raila
During the same event, President William Ruto dedicated this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations to the late Raila Odinga, honouring him as one of Kenya’s greatest statesmen.

Addressing the gathering at Ithookwe Stadium, Ruto described Raila as a man who embodied the nation’s struggle for democracy, freedom and unity.

“As the nation continues to observe the seven days of mourning for the passing of our former Prime Minister, it is fitting and worthy to anchor this year’s Mashujaa celebrations in our departed legend, Raila Odinga,” Ruto said.
The celebrations, which drew thousands from across the country, were also attended by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Mozambique’s Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy, who joined Kenyans in honouring the country’s heroes and the late Raila Odinga’s legacy.
