Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, on Friday, September 12, 2025, sensationally revealed that President William Ruto is plotting to sponsor a presidential candidate from Murang’a.

Speaking moments after meeting with a section of Murang’a MCAs, the former second-in-command claimed that nothing meaningful was happening at State House, insisting that Ruto’s only focus was to divide the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua’s accusations come a day after ODM leader Raila warned against early and persistent campaigns, saying they hurt development.

Gachagua warns Murang’a leaders

Gachagua accused President Ruto of attempting to mislead Murang’a residents with promises of leadership that he alleged were carefully designed to derail the unity of the region.

It is worth noting that the second deputy president had earlier claimed that Ruto was executing a well-funded scheme to weaken the opposition, beginning with Mount Kenya, a region known for its large voter base.

“Even today, President Ruto is cheating the people of Murang’a, who have never led, and that it is their time to lead.

“We know for sure he has prepared a small blue wheelbarrow to the people of Murang’a so that he can cheat them to have a presidential candidate who he is sponsoring, who he is spending money on, to come and divide the people of Murang’a,” Gachagua said.

He went on to describe the plan as a direct assault on the unity of Mt Kenya, but remained confident that residents would reject what he called “political lies.”

“Bad news is that the people of Murang’a are wise people. They can see when there are lies. Nobody can deceive them anymore,” he added.

Accusations against the State House

The outspoken former deputy president further dismissed Ruto’s State House meetings with Murang’a leaders, saying they were not about development but rather schemes to weaken the political bloc that has historically held huge sway in national elections.

According to Gachagua, the President’s new plan is not anchored on addressing the country’s economic crisis but on consolidating political power through divisive tactics.

“Nothing constructive is happening in the State House. President William Ruto is on a mission to divide the Mt Kenya region before the upcoming 2027 poll with hopes that the votes will be split,” Gachagua declared.

The remarks underscore the deepening political rift between Ruto and his former deputy, with the battle for the soul of Mt Kenya now threatening to reshape succession politics as the 2027 elections draw closer.
