Ruto vows to fulfil Ksh1M promise to Harambee Stars players after Morocco win

President William Ruto has pledged to reward each Harambee Stars player with Ksh1 million following their hard-fought 1-0 victory against Morocco in the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).
In a tweet posted on Sunday, August 10, 2025, shortly after the match at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, he celebrated the team’s performance and promised to reward them handsomely.
“Congratulations to our boys mumecheza kama nyinyi. Sasa nitacheza kama mimi!” he wrote, pledging to do his part after the win.
Ruto then praised the team’s determination and resilience, especially given that they played most of the game with only 10 men after a red card reduced their numbers.
“Once again, the resilient, indomitable Kenyan spirit has roared to life at Kasarani! Harambee Stars stood tall, defying the odds to defeat one of the tournament’s giants Morocco.”

The victory was a major boost for Kenya, putting the Harambee Stars in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals of the continental tournament.
With four points from two matches, they lead Group A ahead of Morocco and other contenders. The President expressed optimism about their progress: “Kenya is rising. We are conquering arenas where no one thought we could stand, let alone triumph. This is Kenya. We believe. We fight. We rise.”
Motivation and past rewards
Ruto’s promise to reward the team follows earlier incentives offered before and during the tournament. Prior to the CHAN opener, he pledged Ksh1 million bonuses for each player, which were paid after their opening win against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The team also received Ksh 500,000 each after a resilient draw with Angola.

The Harambee Stars now carry the hopes of a nation as they aim to maintain their unbeaten run and advance further in the championship.
