Ruto, Raila share stage at Blue Economy Conference in Homa Bay

President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga share the stage today at the Blue Economy Summit at Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay County.
The even focuses on using Kenya’s water resources, such as Lake Victoria, to create jobs and grow the economy.
The summit aims to tap into the potential of Homa Bay, a county that controls 80% of Kenya’s Lake Victoria waters, to drive projects like fishing, tourism, and sustainable water use.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga welcomed the leaders to the summit, expressing optimism about the region’s future. The theme is “Our Water, Our Wealth.”

“Welcome to Homa Bay, Baba! It’s always a joy to have you here with us,” she posted on her X account today.
Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs, Ali Hassan Joho, also attends the event. Other leaders present include Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, Nominated Senator Beatrice Akinyi Ogolla, Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo Mabona, and several local MPs, such as Homa Bay Town MP George Peter Kaluma, along with many others.
Ruto’s Nyanza tour highlights
Yesterday, on Thursday, 29 May 2025, President Ruto was in Kisumu County as part of his Nyanza region tour. He visited the Makasembo Housing and Otonglo Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu Town. He also presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the LV Marina Affordable Housing Project, a key development for the region.

The summit builds on the Homa Bay Blueprint, a 2024 initiative to improve Lake Victoria’s water quality. The project, involving local communities and the Ministry of Water and Environment, aims to create a cleaner lake and support local businesses through a circular economy.
At the summit, Ruto and Raila will discuss how the blue economy can benefit Kenyans by creating jobs and protecting the environment.
On Sunday, 1 June 2025, he will lead the Madaraka Day celebrations at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, where he is set to launch several development projects. His Nyanza tour, covering Kisumu and Homa Bay, will last four days, ending on Sunday.
