President William Ruto has postponed his planned development tour of the Ukambani region, which was scheduled for later this month, to allow for ongoing discussions with leaders in the area.

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua, in a statement following his meeting with Ruto on May 13, 2025, confirmed that the president’s tour had been rescheduled to facilitate broader consultations with Ukambani leaders ahead of the visit

The CS further stated that new dates for the development tour will be announced after a broader leaders’ meeting set for Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the State House, Nairobi.

“Following a highly successful consultative meeting with President @WilliamsRuto and senior government leaders from Ukambani, it was agreed that a broader engagement with Ukambani leaders should be held at State House before the planned development tour of the region,” Mutua disclosed.

“As such, the tour has been rescheduled, and new dates will be communicated after the wider leaders’ meeting. The meeting with the broader leadership will take place on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the State House, Nairobi. Mbele iko sawa.”

He noted that the meeting will bring together a wider group of leaders from the region to ensure their views are fully incorporated into the development agenda.

Mutua emphasised that the government is committed to inclusive consultations to deliver meaningful and people-centred development in Ukambani.

Ruto meeting Ukambani leaders

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Ruto held a consultative meeting with a section of political leaders from Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties to discuss development priorities in the Ukambani region at State House, Nairobi.

The head of state, in a statement via his official social media channels, said that the meeting focused on aligning the national government’s development agenda with the needs of the people through continuous engagement with regional leaders and stakeholders.

He emphasised the government’s commitment to delivering inclusive growth from the bottom up, noting that local leadership plays a crucial role in identifying pressing issues and workable solutions.

“Held a consultative meeting with leaders from Machakos, Makueni, and Kitui counties at State House, Nairobi,” Ruto disclosed.

“We are aligning our development agenda with the priorities of the people through continuous consultation with leaders and stakeholders. Our objective is to deliver inclusive growth from the bottom going up.”

Ruto’s meeting with the political leaders from the Ukambani region centred on key infrastructure projects, with leaders highlighting the urgent need for improved roads, access to clean water, better education facilities, affordable housing, and modern markets.

“We discussed critical infrastructure projects, including roads, water, education, affordable housing, and markets that are essential to the region’s transformation.
