President William Ruto has announced that the new Mukuru Housing Project has injected Ksh11 billion into the Kenyan economy.

Speaking during the handing over of the first batch of the housing project to the beneficiaries in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the head of state revealed that the project will deliver more than 13,000 homes once completed.

“Once complete, the new Mukuru Housing project will deliver 13,248 homes. So far, it has injected Ksh11 billion directly into the construction and neighbourhood development,” he stated.

Elated by the outcome of the project, Ruto stated that the handing over of the 1,080 units to the beneficiaries marks the most consequential day in his political career.

“Today is one of the most consequential days of my political career that I can hand over keys to people who would otherwise have never had a chance in life,” he stated.

“We are giving you keys not just to open a door or a house but to open a home. We welcome you to dignity and a different life, and that is the commitment I made to the people of Kenya.”

The Mukuru slum in Embakasi will now be referred to as Mukuru Estate following the upgrading plan under the affordable housing programme being undertaken by the National Government.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura made the revelation while addressing the media on May 19, 2025.

“It’s no longer Mukuru Slums; it’s Mukuru Estate,” he said.

The Mukuru project is part of a broader government plan to build 200,000 housing units annually for a period of over five years, targeting to provide homes for more than five million Kenyans.

“It is very cheap because we are talking about a unit going for as low as Ksh3,900 for social housing. Ksh3,900 per month is unbelievable; the other unit is going for Ksh7,250 and Ksh21,160 for the affordable middle class, so you can see people earning Ksh20,000 or less can now own homes,” he added.

The Mukuru handover follows President Ruto’s announcement in December 2024 that, in 2025, the government will begin handing over keys to the affordable housing units.

“In 2025, I will have the honour of handing over the first keys to completed affordable housing units to hard-working men and women from all walks of life.”
