Ruto: Govt will settle half amount for Harambee Stars’ promised houses

Harambe Stars are now set to choose a town of their choice where they would like to have affordable houses promised by President William Ruto.
Speaking to the National football team at State House, Nairobi, on Friday, August 28, 2025, during a lunch event, President William Ruto acknowledged the government’s promise to the team in ensuring a path to homeownership under the Affordable Housing Programme.
“To the boys in Harambee Stars, I know that you would have wanted to own a house; I believe that you would still have to own a home,” Ruto said.
Ruto has acknowledged that the Harambee Stars players will be allowed to choose their preferred town from the available projects, which will be in various towns, including Mombasa, Nairobi, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
“You will choose a house in a town you like; if you want it in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, or Eldoret, wherever we are developing houses, in every town there are at least 200 construction sites,” Ruto said.

Payment plan
On his part, Ruto explained that each player will get a two-bedroom house valued at Ksh2 million, with the government covering half the cost.
“So this is how we are going to do it: the two-bedroom house that we had agreed on under our current arrangement in affordable housing costs Ksh2 million; we are going to pay for you half that amount,” Ruto said.
According to the Head of State, the players have an option of paying at least Ksh1 million, or they can take a mortgage, hence paying at least Ksh2000 or Ksh300.
“You will pay the other Ksh1 million, or we will give you a mortgage, and you are going to be paying something like Ksh2000 or Ksh3000 a month,” Ruto said.
Likewise, the president emphasized that the offer is strictly for a home, not cash.
“There is no room for exchanging the room with money; there is only the house,” he affirmed.
Ruto’s promise
His remark follows his recent promise to Harambee Stars, revealing that they will not only pocket hefty cash rewards if they succeed in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) but also affordable housing units.
At the time, speaking after meeting the team at Pullman Hotel, Upper Hill, Nairobi, President Ruto confirmed that each member of the delegation had already received Sh1 million following their recent victory over Morocco.
Beyond cash incentives, the government had also pledged affordable housing units to the players. Should Harambee Stars advance past the quarter-finals, Ruto said each player will receive Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom house.
