President William Ruto took pride that his Kenya Kwanza government has managed to lower the cost of living since 2022, via policy implementation.

Speaking in Nairobi during the launch of the Nairobi International Trade Fair launches on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the Head of State added that his administration’s interventions in agriculture had directly stabilised food prices across the country.

Fertiliser subsidy boosts farmers

The President highlighted the government’s fertiliser programme as a game-changer in reducing production costs for farmers. He said the cost of a 50kg bag had been cut from Ksh7,500 to Ksh2,500 within two years.

“We also reduced the price of fertilisers from Ksh7,500 to Ksh2,500, a move that has undoubtedly helped us reduce the cost of living through production,” Ruto explained.

According to him, this move has translated into affordable staple foods for households.

“The price of a 90kg bag of maize has dropped by 31 per cent,” he added, noting that the decline has eased inflationary pressures faced by Kenyans.

Ruto also pointed to the digitisation of agriculture through the Kenya Integrated Agriculture Management System, which was launched in 2023 to register farmers on a single platform.

“Today, 7.1 million farmers are active on the platform, up from 300,000 in 2024. This helps us to target real farmers and remove middlemen,” he said.

He explained that the digital tool provides policymakers with real-time data to respond swiftly and design evidence-driven policies.

“Policymakers rely on real-time data to respond swiftly and design event-driven policies,” Ruto told the audience.

The Head of State further disclosed that tea farming has grown by 12 per cent since 2022, attributing the rise to government support programmes.

“Tea growing has increased by 12 per cent since 2022,” he noted, adding that other cash crops are also benefiting from the reforms.

The President concluded by saying the country was on track to achieve food security and improve livelihoods.

“We have stumbled at times, but our deliberate actions are bearing fruit. Kenyans can now feel the relief of reduced food prices and sustainable production,” he said.

The remarks set the tone for the Nairobi International Trade Fair, which brings together farmers, innovators, and investors to showcase Kenya’s agricultural progress under the Kenya Kwanza administration.
