Ruto announces Affordable Housing benchmark trip to Malaysia

President William Ruto has announced an upcoming trip to Malaysia in a bid to benchmark the housing program, marking the beginning of a strategic partnership with Malaysia.

Ruto made his remarks on Monday, November 24, 2025, during the Kenya-Malaysia media brief at State House Nairobi.

On his part, Ruto announced that come 2026, he will be visiting the Asian country to see what Malaysia has done with the housing program in a move to grow the Kenyan Affordable Housing program.

“I will be visiting Malaysia next year and carrying quite a bit of the private sector with me so that they can come and see what Malaysia has done with the housing program, human resource development, and matters of health,” Ruto said.

In addition, the Head of State, while detailing his inspiration for Kenya’s Affordable Housing project, also confirmed that his upcoming visit will involve human resource development.

“When I discuss with the people of Kenya the housing program, where the greatest inspiration came from Singapore and Malaysia, they can come and see what Malaysia has done on the housing program. They can come and see the kind of human resource development that you have done,” Ruto said.

Ruto further explained how he has mirrored the Malaysian health sector through Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage.

“They can also come and see what you have done in matters of health, even as we drive our own universal health coverage here in Kenya.  It is among the lessons that we have learned from your country,” Ruto added.

Malaysian PM remarks on Kenya’s housing project

President Ruto’s remarks come after Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim showered him with praise while comparing himself and Ruto, citing a shared passion for poverty alleviation.

At a State House Dinner on Sunday, November 23, 2025, the Prime Minister lauded Ruto for the affordable housing project, stating how it exemplifies the spirit of remarkable leadership.

“One aspect that is also particularly exciting for me, because I am, like you, very passionate about poverty alleviation, is housing for the poor, for the masses,” Ibrahim said.

He went on, adding that Ruto’s affordable housing unit upholds not only remarkable leadership but also makes sure that the power is utilized fully in the dual spirit of the Kenyatta struggle to champion and assist your people.

“And when I learned this ambitious program over 150,000 units of housing, affordable housing, and housing for the poor—I mean, this exemplifies the spirit of remarkable leadership, not only serving for power, but also making sure that the power is utilized fully in the dual spirit of the Kenyatta struggle to champion and assist your people,” he added.
