Robert Alai: If Sakaja fails to change in 2 months, we will impeach him
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai has issued a stern warning to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, saying the county assembly is ready to initiate impeachment proceedings if the governor fails to change his leadership style within the next two months.
Speaking at a local TV station on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Alai accused Sakaja of arrogance and abrasiveness toward Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), claiming the governor’s behaviour stems from his belief that he has firm control of the majority side in the assembly.
“Sakaja has been very abrasive and arrogant toward MCAs because he believed he had secured the majority side. That is why Raila told him to apologise and implement what the MCAs have raised,” Alai said.
He further suggested that while there were claims impeachment efforts had previously been halted due to financial inducements, the assembly remains determined to hold the governor accountable.
“If impeachment was stopped because money was exchanged, that remains an assumption. We still repeat to Governor Sakaja that if he doesn’t change within the next two months—which he won’t—we will impeach him,” Alai warned.

His remarks come a day after Sakaja was handed a reprieve, as ODM Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) agreed to suspend the impeachment talks, according to Makadara Member of Parliament (MP) George Aladwa.
Aladwa is among the leaders who attended a meeting convened by ODM leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The decision came after weeks of discontent from a section of ward representatives who accused Sakaja of poor service delivery, weak revenue collection systems, and mismanagement of county resources.
Some had already signalled their readiness to initiate an impeachment motion, raising political temperatures in the capital.

Addressing the press after the closed-door meeting, Aladwa said the dialogue had yielded a unanimous decision to temporarily put the impeachment on hold, allowing Sakaja space to address concerns raised by the assembly.
“For the past few hours, we have had discussions where MCAs expressed their issues, and they were heard. With one voice, we agreed that the pending impeachment be postponed and dropped for now.
“We also agreed that the governor should continue with his work, engage constructively, and implement the corrections he has been asked to make in his leadership of Nairobi County,” Aladwa stated.
The ODM Nairobi chair added that the meeting created a platform for open and honest exchanges, noting that all sides had been allowed to air their views. He further thanked Raila Odinga for bringing together the warring factions.
“I want to sincerely thank our party leader, Raila Odinga, for bringing us together. The MCAs have all agreed to this resolution,” he said.
Despite the temporary suspension, Aladwa emphasised that the governor must take the concerns seriously. He noted that Sakaja has been given corrections on key issues and should demonstrate commitment to improve his administration.
