Drama unfolded at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, May 12, 2025, after an activist interrupted proceedings during the ongoing inquest into the death of Rex Masai, who was shot during anti-government demonstrations last year.

The disruption occurred shortly after a key witness, Fredrick Otieno, concluded his testimony.

The activist, Julius Kamau, suddenly rose to his feet and began chanting, demanding justice for Masai, drawing the attention of court officials and attendees.

Kamau expressed his anger at the delayed justice, questioning the role of the judiciary and mentioning the frustrations and humiliation that the parents had endured after their kids died.

“You are causing more pain to the parents of the children who were killed on that day. We cannot take it anymore; we must stand up for the truth,” Kamau stated.

Further, he complained of two witnesses who were scheduled to testify in the inquest of Rex on Monday, May 12, 2025, not showing up.

“Now tell me, where are the witnesses? Where are the accused? Where are they? Why did they not come to court? Where are they? They are out there, maybe arresting more Kenyans; they are out in the streets,” the activists stated.

“A country that is corrupt, we can never get justice, we will never get justice, we are the victims of a country destroyed by greed,” Kamau shouted.

We have no voice

According to Kamau, Kenyans are being treated like criminals and animals in their own country, leaving them with no voice on their rights.

“What kind of country is this? We have no voice, we cannot get justice, we are treated like criminals in our own country, we are human beings for crying out loud, and we have our dreams,” Kamau stated in fury.

His outburst provoked other court attendees who had attended the proceedings in support of the late Rex Masai, who joined him in shouting ‘justice for Rex’, sending the court into commotion.

Lawyer David Mwangi, representing the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), was seen trying to control the activist in a bid to stop him from interrupting the court proceedings.

The presiding Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo was forced to adjourn the court proceedings to allow the security personnel to handle the activists.
