Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has paid tribute to the late Raila Amollo Odinga, describing the former Prime Minister as a statesman who earned deep respect in Moscow for his diplomacy, leadership, and commitment to fostering constructive relations between Kenya and Russia.
A statement issued on Friday, October 17, 2025, which was shared by the Russian embassy in Kenya, said Moscow had received with deep sorrow the news of Raila’s passing, hailing him as an outstanding Kenyan statesman and public figure who played a vital role in shaping Kenya’s modern political history.
“For decades, R. Odinga held key positions in the Government and Parliament. From 2008 to 2013, he served as Prime Minister and enjoyed well-deserved respect not only within Kenya but also abroad,” the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.
“He made a significant contribution to strengthening Kenya’s national unity and consolidating its position on the international stage.”
The statement went on to note that Raila’s diplomatic engagement with Russia stood out as a hallmark of mutual respect and dialogue.
“In Russia, R. Odinga is remembered and appreciated for his respectful attitude toward our country and his commitment to maintaining and developing constructive dialogue and mutual understanding between the two states,” the Ministry added.

The Russian government also conveyed its sincere condolences to Raila’s family, the Kenyan leadership, and the people of Kenya, acknowledging his enduring legacy as one of Africa’s most influential political figures.
Raila, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, was widely regarded as a symbol of Kenya’s democratic struggle and reform.
His political career, spanning more than four decades, included a long history of opposition leadership, advocacy for multiparty democracy, and service as Kenya’s second Prime Minister under the Grand Coalition Government formed after the disputed 2007 election.
The message from Moscow adds to a growing list of international tributes pouring in for Raila, whose death has been mourned across Africa and beyond, underscoring his stature as a continental statesman respected on the global stage.
