Raphael Tuju officially resigns from Jubilee Party

Former Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has officially resigned from the Jubilee Party while lauding former President Uhuru Kenyatta for boldly supporting his political ambitions.
In a letter addressed to former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, August 19, 2025, Tuju said that while he looks forward to working with him in the future, as things stand, he does not see how he adds value to the party.
In his letter to Uhuru, who still remains the Jubilee Party leader, Tuju highlighted the former Head of State’s contribution to his political path while entrusting him with Jubilee Party leadership as a person from the Nyanza region, where the party was essentially anchored in two different communities in Kenya.
“May I take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for having given me the opportunity to serve as the Jubilee Secretary General from 2016 to 2022.
“It was an exceptionally bold political step on your part to have entrusted this sensitive position to me as a person coming from the Luo tribe, while the anchor of the party was essentially the Kikuyu and Kalenjin tribes,” Tuju wrote.
While penning down a goodbye letter to the Jubilee Party, the former CS also stated that he has been out of the country for six weeks and is not fully aware of recent developments in Jubilee.
He, however, thanked Uhuru for the opportunity to serve as the party’s secretary general from 2016 to 2022.
“While I have been out of the country for the last six weeks, a lot seems to have happened with the Jubilee Party, and you have my best wishes. This letter is to thank you and to pay tribute to our political association that dates back to the time when I worked with you under President Kibaki to create the PNU outfit,” Tuju noted.

Political moments with Uhuru
Tuju recalled his political moments with Uhuru, where they had faced political rejection in the past for not being considered loyal enough to their ethnic bases.
“I and you shared some coincidences in the Kenyan political arena. You suffered a defeat for being judged as not being Kikuyu enough, which led to your losing an election when you contested the Gatundu South Constituency under KANU,” Tuju wrote.
In his letter, Tuju said the 2018 handshake between Kenyatta and Raila Odinga caused friction within Jubilee and strained his relationship with William Ruto, despite efforts to resolve the differences.
“I too lost the elections for the seat of MP for Rarieda for not being Luo enough and daring to be associated with PNU of President Kibaki. After your handshake with Raila in 2018, it precipitated hostility between the Kalenjin wing and the Kikuyu wing of the Jubilee Party. To your credit, you shared with me and President Ruto the rat,” he added.
