Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga has sent his message of condolonces to Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera following the tragic death of the country’s Vice President (VP) Saulos Chilima.
Taking to his official X account on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader expressed his condolences to President Chakwera and the people of Malawi.
Raila in his statement said he had learned of Chilima’s tragic death with deepest shock and consternation.
“H.E Lazarus Chakwera, My dear brother, It is with deepest shock and consternation that we have learned of the tragic death of your deputy Saulos Chilima and his entourage in a plane crash. Please accept our deepest condolences to you and the people of Malawi for this great loss!” Raila said in the statement posted on X.

Prior to Raila’s message, ODM had issued another statement with a message of condolences to the people of Malawi.
ODM on Chilima’s death
ODM via X said they had joined the whole of Africa in mourning Chilima’s death.
“We join the people of Malawi and the whole of Africa in mourning the tragic death of the Vice President of Malawi Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others in a plane crash yesterday. Pole sana president Lazarus Chakwera and the people of Malawi for this tragic loss,” ODM said.

Tanzania on Chilima’s death
Tanzania President Samia Suluhu has also sent her message of condolences. Samia in a statement via her official X account said she had learned of Chilima’s tragic death with great sadness.
“It is with great sadness that I have received the news of the tragic demise of the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, the Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.
“On behalf of the Government and People of the United Republic of Tanzania, I convey our deepest condolences to His Excellency President Lazarus Chakwera, the people of the Republic of Malawi, family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” she posted.
It is with great sadness that I have received the news of the tragic demise of the Vice President of the Republic of Malawi, the Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Chilima died on Monday, June 10 2024, alongside nine others on board a Malawi military aircraft.
The Malawian Defence Force said the aircraft ‘went off radar’ after it left Lilongwe on Monday morning.
