A middle-aged man from Kabartonjo in Baringo North was on Thursday morning arrested while on the verge of performing abortion on a 14-year-old girl.
Gideon Rerimoi Kosgei, an alleged quack doctor operating a health clinic without a valid license, fainted when police busted him preparing to help the teenager procure abortion.
Kosgei’s teenage “patient” watched on in disbelief and confusion as police waited for the suspect to regain consciousness, after which they arrested him.
The girl was also taken away by the cops, who later handed her over to her parents.
Residents of Kabartonjo, who were fed up by Kosgei’s alleged criminal activities, had earlier reported him to law enforcement officers, prompting the Thursday arrest.
Francis Chelobei, Baringo County health coordinator, told K24 Digital that the drugs they found in Kosgei’s clinic were expired, with some having their expiry dates as 2007.
“The suspect did not have even one valid operating license. We also learnt that, in his clinic, he was extracting patients’ teeth without having any qualification,” said Chelobei.
“We also confiscated drugs which should only be administered by government health facilities,” added the health coordinator.
Baringo North OCPD, Paul Mwangangi, said the suspect has been in the business of performing abortions on teenagers for long, and that high school teachers recently reported to his office that they suspected their pregnant students sought Kosgei’s abortion services.
“We also discovered that the suspect sold alcohol in the clinic,” said Mwangangi.
Kosgei will be arraigned at the Kabarnet Law Courts on Friday, October 11.
