Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, has praised the residents of Kitui County for turning out in large numbers to witness the historic Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium on Monday, October 20, 2025.

This marks the first time the national event has been held in Kitui, drawing thousands of Kenyans eager to celebrate the country’s heroes.

Speaking during his arrival at the celebration, PS Mueke expressed delight at the early-morning turnout, noting that the stadium was filled to capacity by 4 am.

He said the overwhelming participation reflects the pride and enthusiasm of Kitui residents, as well as the wider southeastern region of Kenya, in hosting the event.

“The mood is vibrant and the people are extremely proud to host Kenya today at Ithookwe Stadium for Mashujaa Day,” he said

Economic and social impact

PS Mueke highlighted the broader impact of the celebrations, emphasising how the influx of visitors has energised local businesses, hotels, restaurants, and transport services.

“Our small traders, Bodaboda riders, and Matatu operators have all benefitted, and local markets are bustling,” he noted, adding that the festivities have brought a week-long boost to the county’s economy.

This year’s Mashujaa Day comes shortly after the nation laid to rest former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose legacy continues to inspire many.

PS Mueke reflected on Raila’s contributions, noting that he remains a hero of democracy, devolution, and national unity.

“Today really is Heroes Day. Prime Minister Raila was one of our heroes, and we expect songs and tributes in his honour,” he said.

The PS lauded the collaborative efforts between the government, Kitui County authorities, and private sector partners that made the event a success.

He urged residents and visitors alike to take pride in their participation, emphasising the significance of celebrating Kenya’s heroes while fostering a spirit of unity and patriotism.

Mashujaa Day, celebrated annually on October 20, honours Kenyans who have demonstrated exceptional courage, service, and dedication to the nation.
