Makueni County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Marketing, Industry, Culture, and Tourism, Sonia Nzilani, passed away due to complications from a pre-existing heart condition, a postmortem result has confirmed.

The examination revealed that fluid buildup around her heart, known as cardiac tamponade, prevented proper blood circulation, leading to her sudden death.

The findings were announced by Nzilani’s family doctor, Ancient Kituku, on Monday, November 24, 2025, in a session attended by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior and a government pathologist.

Kituku explained that Nzilani, 45, had been diagnosed with a heart condition 12 years ago and had been on regular medication while attending cardiology clinics.

The day before her death, she reportedly complained of abdominal pains and sought treatment at a hospital before returning to her rural home in Matindu.

The postmortem revealed that her left ventricle had ruptured, causing nearly 200 ml of blood to accumulate in the pericardium, the protective sac around the heart. The rupture triggered cardiac tamponade, preventing her heart from pumping effectively and resulting in her death. External examination noted pallor consistent with significant internal blood loss.

“Cardiac tamponade occurs when the heart is surrounded by excessive fluid, preventing it from contracting and relaxing properly. In Dr Sonia’s case, the sack was full of blood due to a rupture in the left ventricle, which caused her death. Even from the external examination, she appeared quite pale. The cause of death is cardiac tamponade, secondary to left ventricular rupture due to her pre-existing heart condition,” he explained.

Unresponsive

Nzilani was found unresponsive in her home earlier in the day on Saturday, November 22, 2025.

President William Ruto also mourned her passing, describing Nzilani as a dedicated public servant whose work in trade and culture touched many lives.

Nzilani’s death comes as a shock to colleagues and the Makueni community. Her long-standing dedication to trade, culture, and tourism left a lasting impact, and the postmortem confirms the severity of her pre-existing heart condition that led to her untimely death.
