A police officer attached to the Anti-Stock Theft Unit in Chemoi, Baringo North, was shot dead by bandits on New Year’s eve.

He was among officers who were fetching firewood near their camp when they were ambushed by bandits estimated to be over 15 armed with AK-47 rifles.

The slain officer, who is among those who survived after a police lorry was swept away by flood waters at River Kagir in Baringo North earlier this year killing seven colleagues, was shot in the back as he fled the ambush.

Two other officers suffered minor injuries and returned to their camp where some of of their shelters have been blown away by strong winds.

Tension remains high with shops deserted as some of the residents flee the area in fear of a reprisal attack.

During the flooding incident n May 2020, only five officers survived after the lorry that was carrying 12 policemen was swept away.

The deceased officer had been swept for over 200m before he held onto a life-saving twig.

Their camp was set up in 2012 to tame the runaway insecurity in Baringo North, protect school children and livestock from bandits and cattle rustlers.
