The National Police Service has released an official report detailing the series of events before the death of Albert Ojwang, who mysteriously died while under their custody.

According to the police, the deceased had been booked in Nairobi’s Central Police Station on the night of Saturday, June 7, 2025, a day after being arrested on Friday, June 6, 2025, in Homa Bay County.

While under their custody, police say that the influencer was found unconscious during a routine cell inspection on the night of Saturday, June 7, 2025.

The law enforcers immediately intervened and rushed Ojwang to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment.

“On Friday, 6th June 2025, Albert Omondi Ojwang was arrested in Homa Bay County by DCI detectives for the offense of false publication.”

“Records indicate that he was transported to Nairobi, where he was questioned by officers from DCI Headquarters on Saturday. He was later booked at Central Police Station under Occurrence Book (OB) Number 136/7/6/2025 at 2135 hours,” the statement continued.

Ojwang, however, did not make it to a medical emergency in the hospital, as he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

“During a routine cell inspection, Ojwang was found unconscious. He was immediately rushed to Mbagathi Hospital for treatment, as documented under OB Number 09/08/06/2025 at 0139 hours. Upon arrival, he was declared dead,” the statement added.

Police have further expounded on the decision to suspend all the officers found to be on duty or otherwise involved during the incident.

Additionally, they engaged the Independent Policing Oversight Agency (IPOA) to commence investigations into the matter.

“Given the circumstances surrounding the incident, it was necessary to investigate the death in accordance with regulations governing deaths in police custody. In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) was duly notified to commence investigations.”

The foregoing comes after Police IG Douglas Kanja, on Monday, June 9, 2025, shed more light on Ojwang’s arrest.

During a presser at the Central Police Station, Kanja revealed that the arrest was triggered by a formal complaint from Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service (DIG KPS) Eliud Lagat, who claimed his reputation was being tarnished by Ojwang’s social media posts.

“The reason why the late Ojwang was arrested together with others is because there was a complaint that had been lodged by the DIG KPS about his name being tarnished,” Kanja stated on Monday, June 9, 2025.

“It is on that basis that investigations were being carried out because he has got a right.
