Police launch crackdown on car theft syndicate in Kisumu

Police from Kisumu have launched a major crackdown on a suspected motor vehicle theft syndicate, following numerous complaints from residents who have recently decried a surge in car thefts across the county.
Through a post shared on X on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that several vehicles and spare parts believed to have been stolen were recovered during an intelligence-led operation.
This comes after two persons of interest linked to a series of robbery incidents in the region were arrested. According to a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) the two had been on the wanted list for robbery with violence.
Police using public intel
According to the statement, the joint effort involved officers from Migosi and Kasagam Police Stations, acting on intelligence gathered from the public.
The operation was conducted at Khayeko Junction and Aliwa Village within Kisumu East Sub-County.
“Police in Kisumu have dismantled a suspected motor vehicle theft syndicate following a meticulously coordinated, intelligence-led operation conducted by officers from Migosi and Kasagam Police Stations,” part of the NPS statement reads.

During the operation, law enforcement recovered multiple vehicles, car radios, registration plates, and assorted spare parts believed to be linked to the racket.
Recovered items during the operation
Authorities confirmed that two persons of interest are currently assisting with investigations, while another individual believed to be connected to the network remains at large.
The statement further noted: “A subsequent search of one of the targeted homesteads led to the recovery of additional exhibits, including car radios, vehicle registration plates, and assorted spare parts.”
The exhibits have since been secured at Migosi Police Station as investigators continue the process of verifying ownership.
The crackdown comes as a relief to many Kisumu residents who have repeatedly reported vehicle thefts in parking yards, residential compounds, and along major roads such as the Kisumu-Nairobi and Kisumu-Busia highways.
Motorists in the region have expressed optimism that the latest move will restore confidence and deter future incidents.
The NPS lauded officers for their professionalism and urged the public to cooperate with ongoing investigations.
“The National Police Service commends the officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism and reiterates its commitment to dismantling criminal networks engaged in motor vehicle theft,” the statement added.
Residents have been encouraged to report any suspicious activities through the toll-free hotlines 999, 911, or 112.
