The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has formally endorsed Senator Oburu Oginga as the new party leader following the death of Raila Odinga.

The announcement was made on Monday, October 27, 2025, after a Central Committee meeting held at the party headquarters, marking the first official communication since Raila’s passing.

The committee, led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, described the endorsement as a unifying decision meant to preserve party stability and ensure a smooth transition during what it termed as one of the most difficult moments in the party’s two-decade history.

“The party remains strong and steadfast in all its obligations and will rise stronger from adversity. This being the first meeting of the committee since the passing of the Party Leader, the top party organ resolved as follows: That we endorse Hon. Dr Oburu Oginga as the new party leader,” a statement released after the meeting read in part.

According to the press statement signed by Sifuna, the Central Committee urged all ODM members, officials, and supporters across the country to accord Oburu full support and cooperation.

The party said his leadership will be critical in keeping ODM united and focused on the mission and vision established by Raila Odinga, who led the movement for over 20 years.

“And urge the party rank and file to accord him all the necessary support and cooperation to enable him to guide the party through this difficult time,” the statement added.

The committee also paid tribute to the late Raila, describing him as a peacemaker, liberator, and statesman whose influence spanned generations and continents.

“That in honor of his legacy as a unifier who brought together people of all shades of views and from diverse social, economic, geographical backgrounds,” the statement added.

ODM also reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward Raila’s legacy of democracy, inclusivity, and justice.

The party said it would continue championing the same ideals that defined his political journey and inspired millions of Kenyans.

“ODM shall continue on the path of embracing diversity, and continue the struggle for equality, justice and peace here at home and beyond our borders,” the statement added.
