ODM mourns former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has mourned the death of Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, the former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North.
Lempurkel, who served in the 11th Parliament between 2013 and 2017 on an ODM party ticket, lost his life in a tragic road accident that occurred earlier this week in Rongai.

In a statement on Sunday, August 24, 2025, ODM described him as a dedicated leader who served the people of Laikipia North with commitment.
“We mourn the passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, the former MP for Laikipia North in the 11th Parliament under the ODM party ticket from 2013 to 2017, through a road accident. May God’s peace & comfort be with his family & the people of Laikipia during this time of grief,” the party said.
On his part, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has mourned Lempurkel as a person whose legacy will live forever despite his death.
“I have learnt of the untimely passing on of Mathew Lempurkel with a heavy heart. Lempurkel was a member of the DCP Party and a former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him during this moment of grief. My deepest sympathies to you all. Mathew Lempurkel has departed, but his legacy will live on in our hearts,” he stated.
His demise
Lempurkel sustained serious injuries in the accident and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
Despite efforts by medical professionals to stabilise his condition, he succumbed to his injuries on August 24, 2025.
Known for his vocal advocacy for the rights of the Maa community, Lempurkel served as Laikipia North MP from 2013 to 2017. During his time in office, he was a fearless and passionate defender of indigenous land rights and a staunch advocate for marginalised communities in northern Kenya.
His passing has drawn widespread mourning, with community leaders and former colleagues describing him as a bold, selfless leader who dedicated his life to public service.
