The late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga’s brother, Oburu Odinga, has for the first time responded to recent remarks by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga about Raila’s death.

In his remarks during an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Oburu described Kahiga’s comments as childish and said that by his age, one would not expect such behaviour.

“I thought that Kahiga looks like a mature person because of his age, but those type of thoughts looks childish in my view. I don’t want to take him offensively. As a leader, he should not be thinking of the death of any person, let alone a leader. Whether he was your political enemy, as I said earlier, there are no political enmities. You might be political enemies today, then tomorrow you are together,” Oburu said.

He added, “Supposing he is your boss, how will you feel then of what you said about him? Some of the remarks by some leaders at times don’t annoy me.

“I take it as childish, and I excuse them. I don’t take a grudge with them. I know these are small minds, and if you take grudge with them, your heart might stop earlier than God’s plan,” Oburu said.

What Kahiga said about Raila

The response comes after Governor Kahiga, during a burial ceremony in Nyeri on October 21, 2025, suggested in his native Kikuyu language that Raila’s death was part of God’s plan to get the Mt Kenya region back to enjoying state resources that had been diverted elsewhere.

“You guys can see, you can see what had been planned, but God brought something up. Now it’s total confusion. Everybody can see that,” Kahiga had said.

“We did not harbour hate for anyone, but God came through for us. Because the plan that had been hatched, if you look keenly, for you who do not travel, because I was in that region, all goodies were being directed there because of tomorrow’s plans, because it seemed like they did away with us, but God came and brought this thing.”

He added, “So now people have been told to go back to the drawing board because the plan that was there was probably to throw us out.

“But who is God? Does he take ugali at somebody’s house or sleep in Kayole? He came through in his own way. He saw up there people in heaven are disagreeing a lot and came for Baba so that he can go and smooth things up there.”

Kahiga’s remarks drew widespread condemnation from leaders across the political divide, with many describing them as insensitive, divisive, and inappropriate during a period of national mourning.

Oburu’s comments reinforce the view that leaders should exercise decorum and avoid politicising the passing of public figures.
