Oburu reveals medical condition Raila battled for years

Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga has revealed that his late brother, former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, was battling a clot on his head.

Speaking to a local TV station on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Oburu explained that the clot was being treated by Kenyan doctors in Nairobi, but the strong medications administered were taking a toll on Raila’s strength.

Raila suffered from a blood clot

“I just said that he is unwell, like all human beings become unwell at any other time. He was not in critical condition,” Oburu remarked.

The senator revealed that the medication left Raila feeling weak and tired, forcing him to pull out of some public functions, including the burial of the late MP Dalmas Otieno.

“I went to represent him there because he was feeling weak and tired because of that kind of medication,” Oburu explained.

Oburu further disclosed that after being evacuated to India, the clot was successfully cleared in Mumbai.

“When he went to India, they managed to clear that clot that was there in Mumbai. So by the time he left the hospital there, he was up and about, alive and kicking.

Raila’s life in India

“He went to recuperate in Kerala. He was there for about a week after being discharged from the hospital,” the senator said.

He also highlighted the role of President William Ruto in facilitating Raila’s timely evacuation to India, describing the President’s intervention as crucial to ensuring that his brother received the best possible care.

Raila had been due to leave Kerala on Friday, two days before his passing, after completing his recuperation period, according to Oburu.

The revelation provides clarity on why Raila had recently withdrawn from public engagements and underscores the challenges he faced while battling the clot, a condition that was managed carefully with medical supervision both in Kenya and India.

Oburu’s disclosure also paints a personal picture of the late ODM leader’s final days, reflecting the support he received from both family and state officials to manage his health condition.
