Oburu Oginga sends tough message to young politicians on survival in politics

By , August 8, 2025

Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has issued a stern warning to young politicians, cautioning them to tread carefully if they wish to remain relevant and survive in the political arena for many years.

Speaking during the burial of Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay on Friday, August 8, 2025, the veteran politician noted that political longevity is earned through humility, patience, and respect for senior leaders, not by overestimating one’s influence or disregarding those who paved the way.

He emphasised that emerging leaders must be willing to learn from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other seasoned politicians who have mastered the art of navigating Kenya’s political landscape.

“If you want to live long in politics, please do not think you are the greatest in the world. Always remember that you are under those you found before you, and work hard from there,” he said.

He acknowledged that some young politicians have been grumbling about the current political direction, but urged them to remain patient and take guidance from experienced leaders.

According to him, those who ignore this advice risk cutting short their political careers.

“We know there are some young politicians who are grumbling, but they should be patient. Some of them are very young, and they should be willing to learn from Raila and from us. We are ready to give them direction, and we do not want to force them,” Oburu added.

Ruto’s reception

Oburu then remarked that the political reception in certain regions, including the enthusiastic welcome given to President Ruto in Homa Bay, was a result of Raila Odinga’s influence in convincing the people that the President is taking them to Canaan.

He said the shift in attitude was a testament to the trust Raila commands among his supporters, and a reminder that strong alliances and credible leadership shape political tides.

“Some years back, when you were campaigning here, you could not get the kind of standing ovation you are getting now. This is because Raila has told the people that this is the way to go and has convinced them that the president is taking them to Canaan,” he said.

On that note, the senator also affirmed his commitment to the current political arrangement, saying that the broad-based government will remain intact until the 2027 general election, with a focus on building bridges and strengthening political unity ahead of the polls.

He expressed confidence that the partnership will succeed in delivering its goals.

“Your Excellency, we are in this broad-based government to stay until the 2027 polls, and we are sure we will build bridges and lay bricks until we get there. I am confident we will be successful.”
