Oburu Odinga mourns death of his sister Beryl Achieng

Siaya County Senator and newly appointed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Odinga, has expressed sorrow over the death of his sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga.
In a statement shared on his X account on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, Oburu said her passing was sudden, and he accepted it as God’s will.
“It is with heavy hearts, yet in humble acceptance of God’s will, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga, my sister. Beloved daughter of the late Hon. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga, Beryl was a devoted mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai,” he stated.
The news of Beryl’s death was first confirmed by Raila Odinga’s elder sister, Ruth Odinga, who revealed that she passed away on Tuesday, November 25. The family has not disclosed the cause of her death.
Beryl Achieng Odinga was widely known for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support for her loved ones. She was the daughter of Kenya’s first Vice President, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and Mary Ajuma Oginga, and a devoted mother to her three children, Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai.
“It is with a heavy heart, but accepting the will of God, we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga. Daughter of the Late Hon Jaramogi Odinga and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga. Mother to Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai. Sister to Senator Oburu Oginga, Rt Hon Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa, among others. Sister-in-law to Dr Anne Oburu, Dr Canon Ida Odinga, Hon Tabu Osewe, and Judy Oburu,” Ruth Odinga stated.

“While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms and are thankful for the invaluable gift of the time we were privileged to share with her and for the profound impact she had on all who knew her.”
Beryl’s death comes just weeks after the nation mourned the passing of her brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, marking a period of grief for the Odinga family and the country.
Senator Oburu Odinga has been in the public eye since his younger brother, Raila, passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and was laid to rest on October 19, 2025, at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya. After the burial, Oburu led ODM members in celebrating the party’s 20th anniversary in Mombasa in mid-November. He has also been on various campaign trails ahead of the November 27 by-elections across the country.

On Friday night, November 21, 2025, Oburu Odinga announced that he would take a short break from politics.
”Feeling grateful for good health and high spirits. Taking a short sabbatical to recollect, recharge, and reset,” Oburu announced on his X.
“We took Mzee to go and rest. We forced him… we forced him that he has to take a break. Atarudi at the end of next week,” Jaoko Oburu, the son of Oburu Odinga, stated.
“Mzee ameenda uko kunyoroshwa, kutembea tembea juu anapenda kutembea,” Jaoko added.
