NTSA goes after reckless matatu driver after viral video sparks outrage

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, September 4, 2025, confirmed the arrest of a driver whose matatu was spotted earlier this week defying traffic rules.
Through its X handle, NTSA said the incident had endangered both the passengers and other road users, stressing that such behaviour would not be tolerated on Kenyan roads.
According to a widely shared video clip that has gone viral, the matatu was filmed being driven recklessly with a tout dangerously performing acrobatic stunts at the door.
The vehicle was seen weaving through traffic, executing sharp turns and sudden acceleration that placed passengers at risk.
The viral video sparked outrage from Kenyans who demanded immediate action against the driver and crew.
NTSA calls stunt ‘extremely dangerous’
In its statement, NTSA described the behaviour as life–threatening, warning that sudden braking, sharp turns, or reckless acceleration can easily throw a passenger off balance.

“The stunt was reckless and extremely dangerous. Sudden braking, sharp turns, or acceleration can easily throw the passenger off balance, leading to a fatal fall.
“While in the vehicle, passengers, including the conductor, must always use the seats and seatbelts for their safety,” the statement read in part.
NTSA further noted that the incident highlighted a growing culture of indiscipline among some matatu operators, adding that it will continue to intensify surveillance on major highways and urban centres.
The driver is charged
The driver was later arrested, presented in court, and charged with multiple traffic offences.
The magistrate granted him a cash bail of Ksh100,000 or a bond of Ksh300,000, pending the conclusion of the case.
NTSA thanked members of the public for reporting the incident and urged Kenyans to continue sharing information that can help improve road safety.
“We sincerely thank the public for reporting the incident,” the authority said.
The arrest comes amid increased enforcement efforts by NTSA, which has pledged to deal firmly with rogue matatu operators.
All the same, the stunt should serve as a warning to all drivers that flaunting traffic rules is not only illegal but also endangers lives and carries heavy legal consequences.
